Telltale Games Game of Thrones
So somehow I hadn’t heard about this.
Telltale games, the company responsible for the excellent The Walking Dead games, is set to bring us an all new episodic adventure series set in Westeros.
Little is known about the game as of yet, but I’m already excited. Will the player take control of a character created especially for the games who interacts with existing characters in the Game of Thrones universe, ala The Walking Dead? Or will we play as one of the characters we already know and love and guide them through an original story, similar to what Telltale has been doing in The Wolf Among Us, their property based on the Fables comic book? Either way offers plenty of story potential.
It has been reported that HBO has assigned a story consultant to work on the game, suggesting it takes place in the universe shown to us in the television show, opposed to that of the books. Will some of the actors that have brought these characters to life on the small screen reprise their roles for the game? Probably not. It’s more likely that the HBO consultant is there to ensure the games don’t contradict anything, or reveal something that has yet to occur on the show.
Usually a game based on an existing license is little to get excited about, just look at any of the video games based on recent comic book movies for proof, but Telltale’s involvement is reason enough to get your hopes up. The Wolf Among Us has been a neon lit delight so far, but The Walking Dead is the jewel in Telltale’s proverbial crown. That game’s first “Season” was so strong it quickly surpassed both the (admittedly weak) television series and the comic book series on which it was based. If Telltale’s Game of Thrones can do the same, then, wow, we’ve got one hell of a game to look forward to.
